The place

Sacred Heart of Jesus Retreat Center

The retreat center sits on 560 private acres in Matilija Canyon, surrounded by the Los Padres National Forest just outside Ojai. The land has long been a place of retreat, and today it is a working farm with gardens and orchards. Guests stay in a cluster of historic cottages set close to one another, including the 1908 Arts and Crafts Dent House, a Ventura County Landmark.

All times are local. Boise is on Mountain Time, one hour ahead of California.

On the ground

Ground transportation is included. We'll meet you at Burbank and drive you to the retreat center, and handle every drive during the weekend, including Mass and Ojai. No rental car needed.
Airport to retreat center: Burbank to Matilija Canyon is roughly a 1¾ to 2 hour drive via US-101 and CA-33.

Timing

Friday: Landing at 10:14 AM leaves time for lunch in Ojai before check-in opens at 3:00 PM.
Monday: We leave the retreat center at 7:00 AM to make the 10:35 AM flight home.

What to pack

November in the canyon brings warm, sunny days and chilly nights, so layers are key.

Sturdy hiking shoes, plus sandals or water shoes for creek crossings
Layers — a warm jacket or fleece for evenings
Daypack, reusable water bottle, hat & sunscreen
Modest attire for Sunday Mass
Comfortable clothes for the cooking lesson
Flashlight or headlamp — it gets very dark in the canyon
Bible, rosary, and a journal
Personal medications and toiletries
Photo ID for your flights

Join us

$1,850 per person. Fill out the registration form, then Venmo a 50% deposit ($925) to @nicoleosmer to secure your place. The balance is due November 1.
